Comparative Adjectives

Regras:

1) Sempre que necessário, use “than” (=que) para ligar as duas partes sendo comparadas.

2) Aos adjetivos curtos, de 1 sílaba,  acrescenta-se o sufixo “er”:

old –> older                    new –> newer

short –> shorter           tall –> taller

cheap –> cheaper        near –> nearer

3) Se o adjetivo já termina em “e”, acrescenta-se somente o “r”:

nice –> nicer

late –> later

4) Se o adjetivo termina em: consoante – vogal – consoante, duplique a última consoante:

big –> bigger

5) Adjetivos de 2 sílabas, terminados em -y, terminam em -ier, removendo o “y”:

happy –> happier          pretty –> prettier

easy –> easier                 chubby –> chubbier

6) Adjetivos longos (com 2, 3, 4… sílabas) não tem o radical alterado. Usa-se a palavra “more” antes do adjetivo.

Igual a construção do compativo em português. Exemplos:

modern –> more modern                                    expensive –> more expensive

polite –> more polite                                             tired –> more tired

comfortable –> more comfortable                  beautiful –> more beautiful

7) Exceções:

GOOD –> BETTER

BAD –> WORSE

FAR –> FURTHER

§  I’m older than my brother.

§  Traveling by bike takes longer than traveling by motorcycle

Comparative Adjectives:
Words That End In Consonant + Vowel

Double the last letter and add -er

Hot	Hotter
Thin	Thinner

§  An elephant is bigger than a cat.

§  Brazil is hotter than Sweden.

§  My sister is thinner than me.

Comparative Adjectives:
Words That End In Consonant + Y

Remove -y and add -ier.

Happy	Happier
Busy	Busier

§  Reading English is easier than listening.

§  Maria is happier than Dave.

§  People today are busier than in the past.

§  A car is more expensive than a computer.

§  Michael Jackson’s music is more popular than country music.

§  Watching a movie is more interesting than studying grammar.
